Hotel Review: Hotel Julien Dubuque in Dubuque, IA

A while back I hosted a client at the Hotel Julien Dubuque in Dubuque, IA.  True for me I will not take a client somewhere unless I have stayed there, eaten there or at least been there myself first.  This event had been in the works for some time prior to arrival date so I had had plenty of chances to experience their service prior to taking my client there.  I enjoyed my personal stays and came away thrilled with how my two day client event came together.  All of the client evaluations indicated they were also impressed with the Hotel Julien Dubuque.  (Sigh of  relief!).  So here is how it came together………

The Hotel Julien Dubuque is a landmark hotel that, after completing a $30+ million dollar renovation in 2009, stands today as one of the most remarkable luxury hotels in Iowa.  They offer all the amenities one would expect including fine dining, lounge, pool, fitness center and spa.  Located in the heart of the Old Main District the hotel puts you in walking distance of restaurants and shopping with easy access to all the attractions along the Mississippi Riverwalk, including the Mississippi River Museum and Diamond Jo Casino & Entertainment Center.

On arrival the elegance of this hotel is unmistakable before you even open the door.  Inside, the lobby area is truly breathtaking with its grand plush comfort combined with contemporary elegance.  There is a business center in the lobby along with comfortable conversational seating areas tucked throughout.

While possessing an upscale feel the hotel easily accommodates all the usual cast of characters one would expect to see from the bride and groom, to business traveler, to family and casual retiree couple.  There are people in swimsuits and those in robes who have just left the spa.  The typical traveler, whether for personal or business travel, would feel right at home here.

The staff is attentive and helpful.  I was there for business I also had my family along.  The staff easily addressed our varied concerns and questions.  Because I was there for work I needed space for my computer, printer and the other supplies necessary to support my client’s meeting yet still needed space to comfortably accommodate my family. We stayed in the whirlpool suite that featured a king bed and desk area, along with adjoining Luxury Suite that provided for an additional common living area and additional two Queen bedroom and bath.  The rooms are the ultimate in comfort with rich wood tones, plush furniture, flat panel TV’s, luxury linens and spacious bathrooms with walk in showers, and granite topped vanities.  The rooms provide all the technical amenities a business traveler demands with Wi-FI, ergonomic chair and large desk.

Being there for work I was able to experience their meeting and events support and catering.  When I wasn’t working we experienced the rest of what the hotel had to offer from the pool, fitness center, Caroline’s Restaurant, Riverboat Lounge and the Potosa Spa.  My family and I even got a tour of the Capone Suite which is a private spacious (and I mean spacious!) luxury (and I mean luxury) Hollywood style apartment.  They call it suite but it is an apartment!

The event support and catering were excellent.  At various times during the two day event we were in the Louis Pfohl Board Room, River Room and River Terrace, and Fleur de Lis meeting spaces.  Everyone enjoyed the meeting rooms.  The favorite breakfast food…..Eggs Benedict with Florentine Sauce which is a spinach and Fontina cheese sauce.  Favorite reception food…..homemade mini crab cakes with Remoulade sauce, sun-dried tomato pesto on baguette with fresh mozzarella and the ginger carrot soup.

The favorites personally speaking would be the Potosa Spa.  Here is the full story…..I was a bit uncomfortable initially when I booked my appointment for a massage because the only masseuse available was a guy.  Having never gotten a massage from a guy masseuse before, that was a personal hurdle for me.  I usually need a massage after working a large client event so really had to tame my tiger about the guy masseuse.  In the end -absolutely excellent massage.  Then while getting a manicure, I was introduced to the Sparitual brand of hand and nail care products.  They only use organic products.  Well I bought some hand Sparitual hand crème and have ordered that crème since because I like it so well.  Too I really enjoyed visiting with the nail tech who shared the story of the hotel and how the spa came to be named Potosa.  It is a great story but you need to book a stay there to hear it!

Hotel Julien Dubuque is a great location for a large group event, small meeting or special event, wedding or just for a family vacation or romantic get-away.

Great location, luxury accommodations, comfortable crowd, excellent service, great food, outstanding amenities in the hotel.  I would go back again for personal or business travel and will definitely recommend this to my other clients for their meetings and events.

Their website showcases the history of the hotel, accommodations, amenities, meeting, events and wedding services, dining, lounge, spa and area attractions.  There is also a link to see their current packages and specials.
